Gas projects

To effectively balance the generation portfolio, based on its new strategy, Polenergia plans to develop projects based on advanced gas technologies, executing investments involving cogeneration units for industrial offtakers of process steam. They will also be a starting point for the hydrogen transition, for which the Group wants to be fully prepared in the coming years. Both the existing combined heat and power plant in Nowa Sarzyna as well as the planned new gas units should be ready for combustion of green hydrogen, which will contribute to building a zero-emission energy group in the future.

On 29 June 2020, Polenergia and Siemens Energy signed a letter of intent on cooperation in industrial application of high-efficiency cogeneration and introduction of solutions for sustainable production and use of hydrogen. Both parties committed to a long-term cooperation focused on the Polish market, which needs efficient and effective solutions limiting the adverse impact of business activities on climate and environment.

The growing prices of electricity and emission allowances will encourage Polish energy-intensive industry to seek solutions to reduce the cost of electricity and heat used in technological processes, while reducing the carbon footprint of their products. Production of energy from RES requires stabilization, which will be achieved through implementation of contemporary low-emission projects based on natural gas. In the near future, the flexibility offered by this technology will make gas installations a preferred option for increasing installed capacity in the national power system.

In 2020 the European Commission presented a project of taxonomy, or a unified classification, for sustainable activities. Polish industry and energy sector hope that natural gas-fired investments projects will also be included in the taxonomy, which should speed up the energy transition process based on gaseous fuel.
