Cooperation with Gdańsk University of Technology

Polenergia and Equinor, a partner with which the project of Offshore Wind Farms is performed, established cooperation with the Faculty of Ocean Engineering and Ship Technology of Gdańsk University of Technology, which is the only institution in Poland to educate future employees of the sector of offshore wind energy.

What is bathymetry? What does the tectonics of the Baltic Shield look like? How to do tests with a vibrating probe? How long does a weather window last on the Baltic Sea? Answers to the above and many other questions were given to nearly 60 students of the postgraduate studies in Offshore Wind Energy at the Faculty of Ocean Engineering and Ship Technology of Gdańsk University of Technology, which were officially launched on 8 November 2019 for the first time in Poland. Students of the pilot edition of the studies were able to acquire and broaden their knowledge about offshore wind energy as the most dynamically developing technology of obtaining energy from renewable sources in the world.

The letter of intent signed on the date of inauguration between Polenergia, Gdańsk University of Technology and the Polish Offshore Wind Energy Society assumes cooperation in performing the Personnel Competence Development Program for the sector of Offshore Wind Energy.

Starting the studies is directly connected with the expected intensive development of the offshore wind energy market in Poland in the near future. The draft of Poland’s Energy Policy by 2040 envisages the construction of wind mills on the Baltic Sea with the total capacity of over 10 GW, which makes Poland a potential leader in Europe. The aim of the studies is to prepare professional employees for the needs of such a large market. The program of the studies will make it possible to gain professional knowledge in the area of the technologies used in the sector and the operation of offshore wind energy markets as well as all the aspects of preparing and performing projects of offshore wind farms in the Polish Exclusive Economic Zone of the Baltic Sea.

Polenergia, jointly with Equinor (formerly Statoil), performs a project of constructing the first offshore wind farms in Poland, on the Baltic Sea. The Group’s developed offshore projects have obtained connection conditions up to the total capacity of 3,000 MW but the date of their construction depends on the entry into force of the relevant regulatory system.
